The Leshan Giant Buddha is located on Mount Lingyun in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, China, at the confluence of the Min River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River. It is the largest stone-carved seated Buddha in the world, standing at a height of 71 meters. Construction began in the first year of the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty (713 AD) and took approximately 90 years to complete, finishing in the 19th year of the Zhenyuan era (803 AD). The project was initiated by the monk Haitong, who made a vow to build the statue. Facing the Min River, the Buddha has a solemn expression, hands resting on his knees in a dignified seated posture. The intricate craftsmanship of the statue reflects the fusion of ancient artistry and deep religious devotion.
The Buddha’s head is level with the mountaintop, measuring 14.7 meters high and 10 meters wide, with 1,051 spiraled hair buns and ears 7 meters long. Carved into the cliffside, it sits majestically above the river with an awe-inspiring and dignified presence. Flanking the Buddha on the cliffs are two guardian king statues, each over 16 meters tall. On the right side of the Buddha lies the ancient “Nine-Bend Plank Road,” a winding stone path carved during the Tang Dynasty for both construction and worship purposes. Hugging the steep cliff, the trail is narrow, zigzagging, and breathtakingly steep.
The Leshan Giant Buddha stands as a monumental achievement of ancient Chinese craftsmanship and faith — a true marvel in the history of world culture. It is not only a vital symbol of Chinese Buddhist culture but also part of a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site, listed together with Mount Emei. It continues to attract countless visitors and pilgrims from around the world.
The origin of the Leshan Giant Buddha dates back to the Tang Dynasty and was initiated by a revered monk named Master Haitong. At that time, the confluence of the Min, Dadu, and Qingyi Rivers near Leshan was notorious for its turbulent waters, causing frequent shipwrecks and great suffering for local people.
Seeing the plight of the people, Master Haitong vowed to carve a giant statue of Maitreya Buddha into the cliff facing the river, believing that the Buddha’s divine presence would help calm the waters and protect travelers and locals.
To fund the project, he traveled widely to gather donations and famously declared, “I would rather gouge out my eyes than give up my vow,” demonstrating his unwavering determination. Construction began in 713 AD during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong and continued for 90 years, finally completing in 803 AD.
Interestingly, the project had both spiritual and practical effects: the large amount of stone debris from the carving helped to reduce the water’s turbulence by altering the river’s current, thus making navigation safer — a true embodiment of faith bringing tangible benefit.

Buddhism was introduced to Mount Emei as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty, and it later became the sacred site of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (Puxian Pusa), attracting generations of devoted pilgrims. The mountain is home to numerous temples and monasteries, including Baoguo Temple, Fuhu Temple, Qingyin Pavilion, Wannian Temple, and Huazang Temple at the Golden Summit (Jinding).
Ingeniously designed to control flooding, divert water, and irrigate farmland, it has allowed the Chengdu Plain to remain fertile for over two thousand years, earning the region the title of “Land of Abundance.”
Unlike conventional dams, Dujiangyan uses natural topography with components like the Fish Mouth Levee (Yuzui), Flying Sand Weir (Feishayan), and Bottle-Neck Channel (Baopingkou) to regulate water flow without obstructing the river.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, Dujiangyan stands as a testament to ancient Chinese ingenuity and sustainable engineering.

The site is marked by a beautiful white stupa on a hilltop, surrounded by prayer flags, lush forest, and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Nearby stands the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, where monks continue the practice of the Buddha's teachings.
"Namo Buddha" means "Homage to the Buddha", and this sacred place serves as a powerful reminder of selfless compassion and the Bodhisattva path.

About Niushoushan Cultural Park
Niushou Mountain—known locally as Niushoushan (literally “Ox Head Mountain”) due to its twin peaks resembling ox horns—is a centuries-old Buddhist site located in Jiangning District, southern Nanjing. Though modernized as a tourist attraction from 2014 onward, its history as a sacred Buddhist site dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). A temple originally stood here, but was destroyed during the Taiping Rebellion in the 1850s.
The palace has been the shrine for the world's only parietal relic of Buddha (the skull of Shakyamuni), making Niushoushan a sacred location for Buddhists. The relic was found in the Ashoka Pagoda in the underground palace of the Bao'en Temple in Qinhuai District, Nanjing.
About Mount Putuo (普陀山)
Mt Putuo is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains of China, located on an island in the Zhoushan Archipelago of Zhejiang Province. It is especially dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva (Avalokiteśvara), the goddess of mercy and compassion.
The mountain is both a pilgrimage site and a scenic destination, known for its ancient temples, sea-facing shrines, sandy beaches, and lush hills. The three most important temples are Puji Temple, Fayu Temple, and Huiji Temple, each with deep historical and religious significance.
In addition to its religious importance, Mount Putuo is admired for its natural beauty, often described as a place where the sea, mountains, and Buddhist culture harmonize.
About Guoqing Temple (国清寺)
Guoqing Temple is one of the most historically significant Buddhist temples in China. Guoqing Temple is the cradle of the Tiantai School (天台宗) of Chinese Buddhism, founded by Master Zhiyi (the manifestation of Shakyamuni Buddha in China). Guoqing Temple is not only an important Buddhist sanctuary in China, but it has also had a profound influence on the development of Buddhism in Japan, Korea, and other regions.
What Do People Say?
“A Pilgrimage That Changed My Life.”
The pilgrimage to China in October 2024 came at a time when I was at a personal crossroads. From July to December 2024, I was on prolonged medical leave to recover from work-related anxiety and stress. It was a difficult period – mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I had lost my sense of direction and was earnestly searching for meaning, healing, and peace.
Between July and September 2024, I found myself drawn to Buddhism, particularly to Pure Land teachings. I began watching Jiawen’s YouTube videos, and they became my spiritual lifeline. Her teachings, so clear and compassionate, lit a spark in me. For the first time in a long while, I felt like I was beginning to understand who I was meant to be and what truly mattered.
At the same time, my doctor advised me to travel, to relax and recover. I nearly signed up for a leisure trip to Greece to simply unwind. But deep inside, I felt a different kind of calling – not to escape, but to return to something greater. When Jiawen announced her pilgrimage trip to China, I knew immediately: this was the journey I was meant to take. More than just visiting sacred sites, it was a chance to physically take refuge in the Three Jewels under Master Renshan at Zhenning Pure Land Temple. It was the turning point I had been praying for.
It meant even more when my father chose to join me. We had never travelled like this together, and the shared experience brought us closer in ways I never imagined. Alongside 11 other pilgrims from Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, France and Malaysia, we formed a beautiful and diverse spiritual family.
Over two weeks, we visited sacred Buddhist sites such as Mt Wutai, the Hanging Temple, Yungang Grottoes, Luoyang, and ended in Shanghai. We paid homage to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and experienced profound spiritual awareness at every step. I never thought I could sustain the entire trip on a vegetarian diet but miraculously, I not only adapted, I felt especially good. My digestive system, which has been troublesome for years, felt calm and nourished throughout the trip. The accommodations were consistently clean and comfortable, some even quite new. And spending two nights in the temple was a rare and meaningful experience. The simplicity, serenity, and routines of temple life grounded me deeply.
Above all, this journey strengthened my faith in Amituofo. From the unexpected snow and divine encounters at Mt Wutai, to the sincere Dharma teachings and precious moments of chanting and reflection, every experience felt like a blessing. It wasn’t just a pilgrimage, it was a return to myself, and to something far greater.
This trip far exceeded my expectations. It gave me renewed purpose, and most of all, it reaffirmed my vow to walk the Pure Land path with faith, humility, and joy.
I am deeply grateful to Jiawen, Guo Zheng (our tour guide), the organisers, the Dharma protectors, and all my fellow pilgrims. I look forward – without a doubt – to the next trip.
Namo Amituofo 🙏 May all beings hear the name of Amitabha Buddha and be reborn in His Land of Ultimate Bliss.

“The 2024 China Pilgrimage was an unforgettable journey.”
made all the more special by sharing it with a fantastic group of fellow Pure Land practitioners. Together, we explored some of China's most amazing Buddhist sites, including Mt. Wutai, the Yungang & Longmen Grottoes, and lots of important temples.
This incredible experience was expertly organized and led by Jiawen. Her meticulous attention to detail meant we could immerse ourselves fully in these extraordinary places without the usual hassles of travel. As a non-Chinese speaking Westerner, the trip took me to sites that would have been difficult to visit on my own. The itinerary was perfectly paced, giving us plenty of time for guided tours, followed by individual exploration and personal reflection at each site. I never felt rushed.
A major highlight throughout the pilgrimage was when Jiawen arranged for us to take tea and talk with senior monks and masters. This gave me the chance to ask questions and find answers to some of my long-standing questions about practice.
The accommodation was a pleasant surprise—far better than what I typically book when travelling solo. And the food was a true revelation. Jiawen, a self-described "foodie," elevated vegetarianism to an art form. We enjoyed extraordinary meals, remarkable in their presentation, flavour, and quantity. I'll never forget the vegetarian prawns, with their near-perfect look, texture, and taste. Another unique experience was a temple meal, served and eaten in meditative silence in a vast dining hall.
Beyond the wonderful time I had, this pilgrimage expanded my understanding and appreciation of Chinese Buddhism, revealing its immense richness, depth, and culture. I'm already looking forward to the next one!
